Fit to be Tied Print E-mail

I had fun watching the All-Star Game last night, it was a good show. I didn't mind that it ended in a tie, though I'm a little puzzled about why they didn't hand out the Ted Williams Award. What, because the game is a tie, there can't be an MVP? Whazzup with that? (It should have gone to Barry Bonds).

The pre-game ceremonies were a little overdone and seemed to go on forever. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, Carlton Fisk, Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Cal Ripken, Bill Mazeroski, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson, Kirk Gibson, Joe Carter, et al... so, what are they going to do next year? Hold a seance in centre field and contact Ty Cobb?

I wasn't going to write about the game at all, except that I have an idea. Bud wants to ensure that another game never ends in a tie, which will probably mean bigger rosters. But... how about if MLB hires a couple of minor league veterans, guys who have been pitching at Chattanooga for 15 years, and brings them to the game. And if the game goes into extra innings, they get a chance to pitch in the limelight (can you hear the theme from Rocky?). If the game doesn't go into extra innings... well, they still get introduced on national television and get a nice paycheque as well.

Bud has been quoted as saying: "We're going through a whole range of ideas and plan to work quickly..." Why the hell would they work quickly? The next game isn't for twelve months! Take your time to think about it! I'm tellin' ya, we could have had Chris Michalak and Salomon Torres on the mound, and they would have given their all and held nothing back for as long as it took.
