I stayed up and watched this one till the end. As I've written before, since I turned 30 I've become an early-morning person (whereas in my 20's I spent years working in the middle of the night), and rarely watch a game past midnight. I would have loved to have seen J.D. Drew's homer off of K-Rod on Friday night, but I was tucked away at that point. But last night, I did the Clockwork Orange thing, pried my eyes open with some wires to see if the Cubbies could get up off of the mat. The Cubs' defeat is already being dissected by people who know the team far better than I do. I have only one thing to say, and I say it as a self-centred Torontonian: where the hell was Reed Johnson? So far as I can tell, he didn't make a single appearance in the series. I saw him in the dugout - I checked the web for injury reports, but didn't see anything. I read some reports that Lou Piniella was planning to have Kosuke Fukudome executed by firing squad, but nothing about Reed. I don't want to imply that Reed Johnson is Albert Pujols and could have saved the Cubs' season; but then again, you never know. Here in Toronto, there are legions of Reed Johnson fans, and I do find it unfathomable that the Cubs could get swept without even giving him a single at bat, or a single inning in the field. With the season slipping away, Piniella froze up and did nothing; again, I find it unfathomable that he would not give one of his best bench players a chance to do something. |
